Placing horse extensions yourself
Want to place horse extensions yourself? We've put together a DIY kit especially for you!
The horse extensions are extensions that are placed in the hair with a small silicone-lined bead and are no bigger than the strand of your horse's own hair.
So no heat is involved!
Explanation
The technique is a hair-friendly method.
Especially in the period when competitions are just around the corner or your horse is due at a show, the tail looks a mess. It has been rubbing, the foal has been chewing on the tail, or it's down to an accident.
Horse hair extensions can come to the rescue then. A thin, short, frayed tail becomes full and long again with extensions, making your horse complete once more. In summer too, the tail matters, as it keeps the flies away.
We use 100 % real horsehair for the extensions.
If the colour isn't in stock, we can arrange that.
Placing the horse extensions is completely invisible and causes no harm to the horse.
The hairs the extensions are attached to can simply keep growing.
If you place horse extensions yourself, they can stay in +/- 3 months to half a year.
The great thing about this system is that you can simply reuse the extensions.
You can take the extensions out and put them back in using new micro rings, which of course saves money again.
Technique
The horse extensions are extensions that are attached to the natural hair using small strands of hair.
A strand of your horse's own hair is taken and a silicone-lined bead is placed around it, after which small pliers are used to squeeze the bead flat with the strand of hair inside, holding it in place.
Approximately 85-90 cm hair length
Colour: your choice
100% real horse tail hair
Handmade.
For a thicker tail you need between 25 and 50 extensions, depending on the desired result.
To lengthen the tail you need 50 and 125 extensions, depending on the desired result.
The horsehair extensions can be brushed and washed.
Always do this gently, with love and patience, without pulling hard on the hair.
Care
Washing
When you wash your horse's tail with shampoo and conditioner.
With the conditioner, make sure it does NOT reach the base of the extensions but stays well below it, as they can slide out because of it.
If the extensions do slide and come out, you can simply put them back in.
Brushing
Start at the bottom of the tail so you can tackle one tangle at a time.
Hold your horse's tail just below the base of the extensions in your hand while you brush, so you pull on the extensions as little as possible.
This prevents you from pulling out the hairs or the extensions when you hit a tangle.
Use slow, flowing strokes instead of dragging your brush through the hair.
This will help you work knots out gradually and gently, reducing breakage.
Tail detangling spray
You can apply a detangler to the tail before you start brushing.
When using it on the extensions, make sure you stay well below the base of the attachment, or they can slide out.
Hair that is regularly coated with a detangling product will be smoother.
If the extensions do slide and come out, you can simply put them back in.
You can use an old pair of riding gloves when using the detangler. They not only protect your hands, the product also rubs off onto the gloves and lets your fingers glide through the tail more easily.
Using the extensions
If you place horse extensions yourself, they can be reused several times until they are worn out.
How quickly the extensions wear varies from horse to horse: the 1 keeps them in longer than another.
Our product is hair-friendly, but there are exceptions to the rule.
Sometimes horses lose the extensions for whatever reason, or pull them out along with their own hair, for whatever reason.
This can be caused by a hair disease, which we can do nothing about.
It can also be that the horse pulls on the extensions itself, gets caught on something or stands on them, with its own hair getting caught and pulled along – we are not responsible for that.
An animal is always an animal, so how it behaves with the extensions is unpredictable.
